The debate over organic versus conventional produce has been ongoing for years. So, what’s the difference, and is organic always the better choice?

This can mean fewer chemicals in your diet, which is a priority for many health-conscious shoppers. Organic farming is also generally better for the environment, promoting healthier soil and biodiversity.

However, organic produce tends to be more expensive, which may not always fit into everyone’s budget. Conventional produce, while grown with chemical fertilizers and pesticides, is still safe to eat—rigorous testing ensures that pesticide levels remain well below harmful thresholds.

So, when should you go organic? It’s often recommended for produce where you eat the skin, like apples, berries, and leafy greens, as these can retain more pesticide residue. For items like bananas or avocados, where you peel the skin, conventional options are usually just as good.

In summary, organic produce can be a healthier choice for both you and the environment, but it’s not always necessary. If you’re on a budget, prioritize organic options for fruits and veggies where you eat the skin, and choose conventional for produce with a protective peel.
